KFC on a slimming diet? YES PLEASE! There’s no need to deny yourself the succulent chicken, crispy coating and not-so-secret spice mix anymore, with our delicious KFC Fakeaway. This is a real crowd pleaser of a recipe: mild enough that the kids won’t think it’s too spicy, yet savoury and full of flavour for an ideal for a fakeaway Friday. Do you need any special ingredients to make this KFC Fakeaway?
Panko is a Japanese-style breadcrumb traditionally used as a coating for deep-fried foods, and is made from bread without crusts. It’s lower in calories than regular breadcrumbs, and it’s a bigger crumb so it goes further. There are also many other things you could use such as Smash, crushed Rice Krispies, a breadcrumbed wholemeal roll, couscous, quinoa or bulgar wheat.
The values we have provided are using panko breadcrumbs so make sure you adjust the values accordingly.

We like to use panko breadcrumbs because you get more bang for your buck. It can be found in the Oriental aisle of most supermarkets, or you can get it on Amazon.
You can bake the chicken on greaseproof paper to make sure nothing sticks to the tray. It’s so handy to keep in the cupboard!

Hi, is it okay to freeze it once coated (before cooking) then defrost and cook another day? Think my Mum would like it, but it would be easier to make her a few and freeze them, so she can cook them when she wants it.
HollyMonday 7th February 2022
Hi Claire, we recommend freezing this recipe once cooked and then reheat once defrosted until piping hot. Hope that helps!
Ellie KettletyWednesday 12th January 2022

MichelleFriday 30th April 2021
Hi, which book is this recipe in please? Are all the website recipes in the books or are they extra? Thanks!
HollyFriday 30th April 2021
Hey Michelle, this recipe doesn’t appear in any of our books but we do have the KFC Zinger Burger which appears on the website and in book 3 Quick and Easy. Some of our recipes are exclusive to our books and some are exclusive to our website so you will find a good range of new recipes in our books and our website. Hope that helps!

If I didn’t want panko how much of the alternative dressings would I need please? ☺
HollyTuesday 6th April 2021
Hey Marion, There are many other things you could use instead of panko such as Smash, crushed Rice Krispies, a wholemeal roll, couscous, quinoa or bulgar wheat. Just measure out the same amount as we have stated for the panko breadcrumbs and adjust the nutritional values accordingly. Hope that helps!
LauraThursday 4th March 2021
Could you make this in an air fryer do you think? I just got mine yesterday and trying to find things I can make in it! Haha
HollyThursday 4th March 2021
Hi Laura, yes you can cook this in the air-fryer! I would suggest a temperature of 190ºC for 15 minutes but cooking times can vary for air-fryer makes and models so there may be a suggested timing chart included with your air-fryer for reference. Always check your chicken is cooked through by checking that the juices run clear and no pinkness remains. Hope that helps!

Just made your fakeaway chicken yesterday & was really impressed. I’m a very fussy eater who eats all the wrong food but desperately need to lose weight. Which of your books would you recommend please. I eat too much bread but don’t like much else.

Could I use an electric hand mixer as I don’t have a food processor?
SharonThursday 14th January 2021
Hi Lauren, using an electric hand mixer to blitz the spices won’t work I’m afraid. You need to make them into a powder so you need to crush them. You could place them in a sealed, strong plastic food bag and carefully crush them with a rolling pin or use a pestle and mortar if you have one.
Do hope this helps and that you enjoy this recipe!

Hayley WaiteMonday 12th October 2020
Regarding the above. Under the chicken instructions it says to mix all the breadcrumbs with only one tablespoon of spice mix. So I’m correct that I store the rest of the spice yes? As I have a lot left over if I’m only using 1 tablespoon with the breadcrumbs. Or does this mean per piece of chicken. Apologies if it appears to be a silly question. Thanks
HollyTuesday 13th October 2020
Hi Hayley, yes the KFC Fakeaway recipe needs 1 tbsp of the spice mix for the whole of the recipe. You can store the leftover spice mix in an airtight container until you want to use it again. Hope that helps!
CarysSaturday 3rd October 2020
hi I’m struggling to find dried onion flakes. Could I use something else?
HollyWednesday 7th October 2020
Hi Carys, If you can’t get hold of onion flakes you could substitute them for 1 tsp of onion powder. Hope that helps!

Can I use chicken thighs bone in for this and cook for how long
LisaWednesday 8th July 2020
Hi Alan. Yes, you can use bone in thighs for this recipe. We’ve only tested it with boneless thighs, so can’t give you exact timings, but you will need to cook it for a little longer. Make sure the juices run clear or use a meat thermometer to ensure the core temperature is 75ºC. Hope this helps.
JoSaturday 30th May 2020
Would this work well with fish instead of chicken? What would the cooking time be? Thank you in advance
LisaSunday 31st May 2020
Hi Jo. Yes, you could certainly try this coating with fish. The cooking time would depend on the type of fish you used. You might need to reduce the cooking time a little for thinner fillets. Hope this helps!
DanielleFriday 15th May 2020
I dont have mustard seeds can i use mustard powder instead?
LisaMonday 18th May 2020
HI Danielle. Yes, you can, but you will need less of it. Just add a pinch or 2. Enjoy the recipe!
FionaMonday 10th February 2020
This recipe looks fab. I haven’t a food processor would a pestle and mortar work instead?
Sharon FitzpatrickMonday 11th May 2020
Hi Fiona, yes, a pestle and mortar should work, it’ll just take a bit longer for you to make a powder. Thanks for your question!
