silly question maybe, but if i was to swap for pork sausages, would i still use chicken stock or change it to pork?
SharonMonday 17th October 2022
Hi Lesley, if you used pork sausages you could use either chicken or pork stock stock. Either would work well so it’s just down to personal preference. Thanks for your question and enjoy the recipe!
MichelleSunday 18th September 2022
I don’t like thyme so can I sub this for something like sage?
Thanks
Michelle
HollyTuesday 20th September 2022
Hey Michelle, we have only tested this with thyme but sage should work okay too, hope that helps!
PaulTuesday 17th May 2022
Would this work with Veggie sausages ?
HollyWednesday 18th May 2022
Hi Paul, yes you can swap to a meat free sausage of your choice, hope that helps!
JANESunday 24th April 2022
I plan to cook this in the oven today but am wondering the order of cooking the ingredients? Should I saute the veg, brown the sausage and then put everything in the pot? Thank you!
HollyTuesday 26th April 2022
Hi Jane, you could brown the sausages to give them a little colour before putting them into your casserole dish but you should be fine following the slow cooker method and cooking in a casserole dish with a tight fitting lid, or in an oven tray with some foil tightly wrapped around the top. Cook for 2 – 3 hours at 170 – 180°C, checking every 30 minutes or so. Hope that helps!

Do you have to par boil the potatoes? Had mine on for 8h on low and the potatoes is still not cooked through properly. Hoping to up it to high will solve the problem.
HollyWednesday 16th February 2022
Hey Emma, no need to par boil the potatoes before adding to the slow cooker. The settings on slow cookers can vary between brands so it could just be that on your low setting the casserole needs longer to cook than we have specified. Hope that helps!

Can I use a beef stock cube instead of a beef stock pot?
Many thanks!
HollyMonday 22nd March 2021
Hi Rebecca, yes you can swap for a stock cube but the flavours may not be quite as rich as stock pots have a more concentrated flavour, hope that helps!
CallyWednesday 10th March 2021
This sounds like a really silly question. I really want to slow cook this casserole as I’m making it tomorrow but the place I am staying it doesn’t have a slow cooker and I really would prefer to slow cook it. The oven that I have has a slow cooking feature. Would it work if I slow cooked it in the oven just as well as the slow cooker?
Sorry for the stupid question!
SharonFriday 12th March 2021
Hi Cally, we haven’t tried cooking this in an oven with a slow cook feature ourselves, but it should work fine. Hope you enjoy the recipe!
SamFriday 5th March 2021
Hi can you substitute the butter beans for anything? Thanks
SharonFriday 5th March 2021
Hi sam, you could use baked beans, red kidney beans or cannellini beans instead of butter beans if you prefer. Hope this helps.
ChrisThursday 4th February 2021
Even though the recipe doesn’t say so ….. is it better to cook the sausages first and then add them?
HollyFriday 5th February 2021
Hi Chris, you can lightly brown the sausages in a frying pan before adding them to the slow cooker if you want but it’s not essential. Hope that helps!
ChristinaWednesday 3rd February 2021
Sorry, Which stock pot (chicken or beef) do you put in with the beans near the end please?
HollyWednesday 3rd February 2021
Hi Christina, this recipe uses 1 chicken stock cube made up with 250ml water this is added in step 1. Then in step 4 you add the beef stock pot with the beans. Hope this helps!
TessaWednesday 3rd February 2021
Hi – can you make this with veggie sausages? Thanks
HollyWednesday 3rd February 2021
Hi Tessa, yes this should work great with vegetarian sausages!
Suzanne EmeryThursday 28th January 2021
Hello, I have this in the slow cooker as we speak but I am worried I don’t have enough liquid in there? Sorry for silly question. Have I maybe done something wrong?
Thank you
LisaThursday 28th January 2021
Hi Suzanne
The vegetables will release some moisture as they cook, and you don’t get much evaporation during slow cooking. If you have followed the recipe, it should be fine.
KirstyThursday 28th January 2021
Can you use low fat pork sausages instead?
HollyThursday 28th January 2021
Hi Kirsty, yes you can use low fat pork sausages and adjust the nutritional information accordingly, hope that helps!

Hi! I’ve just moved house and my slow cooker is still in storage; is there a way to make this recipe at home not in the slow cooker?
HollyTuesday 12th January 2021
Hi Hayley, Have a look at this article which gives you some tips for converting recipes https://pinchofnom.com/how-to-convert-recipes-to-a-slow-cooker/
Paul FosterSunday 3rd January 2021
Now, this might seem like a silly question, but here goes!
In the recipe above it says to make 250ml chicken made up with 1 stock cube. Does that mean to use a Knorr stock cube (other brands available) that normally would make 500ml but only add half the water, or cut the stock cube in half?
If this was a Facebook group type question I am sure there would be lots of people saying – DUH!!!, but I quite often see this type of ingredient instruction – not just on your wonderful site but others too.
I think it would be the former suggestion I made as slow cooking tends to increase the liquids naturally anyway!
HollyMonday 4th January 2021
Hi Paul, not a silly question at all! This recipe uses 1 chicken stock cube made up with 250ml boiling water. Hope that helps!
RebeccaSaturday 2nd January 2021
Hi, can I just check how many of your daily fruit and veg portions would be included in this? Thank you!
LisaMonday 4th January 2021
Hi Rebecca
This NHS website gives you plenty of info on fruit and veg portions. Hope this helps!

Jayne KingSunday 8th November 2020
I don’t like chopped tomatoes and they are in this recipie can I substitute them with something else please looking forward to your reply Jayne X
HollyMonday 16th November 2020
Hi Jayne, you could substitute the 2 cans of chopped tomatoes for a combination of passata or tomato soup with a can of baked beans and adjust the calories accordingly. Hope that helps!
