Our Peri Peri Creamy Chicken is a surefire midweek wonder. It’s no secret that we love finding new ways to enjoy creamy chicken dinners, and we know we’ve outdone ourselves with this one.
By combining chicken breasts, colourful veggies and reduced-fat cream cheese, we’ve given ready-available ingredients a peri-peri makeover that’s too good to miss. Just as delicious and better for you than popping out for a cheeky Nando’s, it tastes indulgent for only 251 calories per portion.
To save pennies and time, we’ve used a readymade peri peri spice blend from Schwartz for our seasoning; any brand of peri peri seasoning that you can find in the herbs and spices aisle at the supermarket should work a treat.
This freezer-friendly wonder also reheats like a dream, so you can reinvent it each time you serve it with a different side dish. From rice to steamed veggies to mashed potatoes, it’s hard to find a combination that doesn’t work.
Why not serve it with Nando’s Spicy Rice for a proper restaurant-inspired banquet, as an extra-special treat?
What diets is this Peri Peri Creamy Chicken suitable for?
This Peri Peri Creamy Chicken can be adapted for gluten-free diets, as long as you swap out the chicken stock cube for a gluten-free alternative.
Please make sure to double or triple check all of your ingredients if you’re cooking for people with allergies.
Do you need any special ingredients to make Peri Peri Creamy Chicken?
There’s lots going on in peri peri seasoning, with blended chillies, onion, garlic, citrus peel, basil, dried lemon juice, peppers and coriander – no wonder it’s so delicious!
We used a readymade version of the peri peri seasoning from Schwartz. You’ll be able to find it at most supermarkets in the herbs and spices aisle, or you can buy it from Amazon.

This Peri Peri Creamy Chicken is perfect if you’re following a calorie-controlled diet, and fits well with any one of the major diet plans such as Weight Watchers.
As a guide, an average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman, that figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. Obviously, if your goal is to lose weight then you might want to adjust these slightly! You can read more about these recommendations on the NHS website.
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 220°C. Line a medium baking tray with foil and spray with low-calorie cooking spray. Place the tomato halves on the baking tray in a single layer, cut-side up.
Step 2
Spray the tomatoes with low-calorie cooking spray and season with salt and black pepper. Place in the preheated oven and roast for 15-20 minutes until they have wrinkled a little and are starting to brown slightly around the edges. Remove from the oven and set aside.
Step 3
While the tomatoes are roasting, spray a large frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry gently for 5 minutes, until they have softened a little.
Step 4
Add the chicken breasts, green and red peppers and peri peri seasoning. Stir, then cook for 4 minutes, turning the chicken breasts over halfway through. The chicken breasts should be lightly golden.
Step 5
Add the chicken stock and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Turn the chicken breasts over and loosely cover with a lid or with kitchen foil. Simmer for a further 10 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked and white throughout. Use a small, sharp knife to cut into the thickest part of the chicken to check. There should be no pinkness and the juices should run clear.
Step 6
Remove the frying pan from the heat and stir in the cream cheese until completely blended. Stir in the spring onions and return to the heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes until the spring onions are tender. If the sauce is too thin, continue to simmer, uncovered, for a bit longer until the sauce has reduced and thickened to your liking. If the sauce is too thick, stir in a little water.
Step 7
Stir the roasted tomatoes and coriander into the sauce and season to taste with salt and black pepper, if needed. Serve with an accompaniment of your choice.

Could you cook it in a slow cooker please
HollyMonday 9th September 2024
Hi Sara, we’ve not tried this recipe in the slow cooker as it’s a fairly short recipe made on the hob and the cream cheese may split. We have a range of slow cooker recipes HERE that you might find some inspiration from. Hope that helps!

Wow, this recipe is the best! You can’t go wrong, went down so well even with my fussy toddler (and my fussy husband who is a chef), they both had seconds. Really feels like an indulgent meal. I love PON, thier books are beautiful also and full of amazing ideas. Would love to know which book this recipe is from as I can’t find it in the books I have.

This was a big hit in our house, was inspired to make it after a lady on Facebook said her son licked the plate after 😂 I used chicken thighs rather than breasts & there was quite a lot of sauce so had to simmer for a while but my husband really enjoyed it so will definitely make again, thanks PON
