We really hate the dark nights drawing in, when it feels like summer came and went in no time at all. Like so many others during the colder months, we tend to steer towards hearty, comforting meals that are quick and easy.
This must be a familiar story, as so many members of our Facebook group love this recipe like we do! In fact, this was a Sunday treat growing up and even now it still feels naughty, despite being much lower in calories and points than a traditional, full-fat version.
Toad In The Hole is also affordable and easy enough to feed the whole family all in one go: who doesn’t love the cracking combo of Yorkshire puddings and juicy sausages?!
It’s a delicious twist on a classic Yorkshire Pudding recipe, adding some protein from the sausages and turning it into a proper comfort food dinner. You could put your own twist on this too, by adding onions, some spicy sausages or even some red onion marmalade.
Do you need any special ingredients to make this Toad in the Hole Recipe?
Nope! Everything in this recipe is easily found in the local supermarket. Use whichever low fat sausage you prefer, but do remember the points and calorie count may differ, so adjust accordingly.

Never made Yorkshire Pudding before. Very easy and it went down well. I will do this again. Even took photo’s and shown off to my Mum she was happy that I’m cooking now instead of putting frozen food in the cooker.

This was amazing!!! I watched through the oven and only baked mine for around 10 minutes as I had a thin layer of batter as I used a bigger baking tray. Just took it out when it was nice and golden – was so lovely! Served with gravy and some boiled veg.

Made this a couple of times now and both times the yorkshire pudding has been spongy and not risen a lot. I wonder if anyone can give any tips? I had the oven on the hottest it could go (gas oven) as I thought it might not have been hot enough after first time but same results both times…

Hey Sophie, sorry you are having a little trouble with the Toad in The Hole. In step 4 you may not have got enough air incorporated into the mix when you were beating it so maybe whisk it for a little longer. Also your tray may not have been hot enough before pouring in the batter make sure it’s preheated for at least 5 minutes in the oven and make sure your tray isn’t too low have a look HERE at our oven temperature conversion guide it might give you a few tips when it comes to oven temperature, hope that helps and let us know how you get on

Hello!
I have just made this and followed the recipe exactly – it was my first attempt at toad in the hole so I was so excited! It was absolutely delicious and well enjoyed but after following the recipe cooking instructions the batter wasn’t cooked properly. I kept it in the oven for approximately an extra 20 minutes and it was still a bit spongy. Looking for some advice on how to fix this next time!
Thanks
SharonTuesday 5th January 2021
Hi Anna, it could be that your oven was not hot enough to cook the batter in the time stated in the recipe.Toad in the Hole needs a hot oven to make the batter rise quickly and then cook through. The oven temperatures in our recipes are for fan ovens. So, for example, 200ºC in a fan oven would be 220ºC in a non fan oven.
Ovens do vary a little so you could use an oven thermometer to check the accuracy of yours.
We’re really pleased you thought it was delicious and hope you have better success next time!

Hiya around what size tray do you use?? Xx
HollyWednesday 26th August 2020
Hi Madison, We used a tray measuring 30cm x 20cm you don’t want it too big as the Toad in The Hole will end up to thin. Hope that helps!
