Dirty Macaroni

Our version of the classic Croatian Šporki Makaruli uses lean pork mince and reduced-fat cheeses to keep the calories low. The herbs and Cajun spice give this dish a nice little kick and the crispy, cheesy breadcrumbs take everything to the next level! If you’re not a fan of pork, then this recipe would also work really well with lean beef mince instead.

Hints & Tips

Below we added some of our communities most common hints and tips. We hope you find them useful.

Dirty macaroni
Add chilli for extra spice I used beef mince.
Add chestnut mushrooms
I added chopped chestnut mushrooms and it was delicious. I’m thinking next time to also add finely diced carrot to add extra veg.
Perfect to prep ahead
I made this ahead of time for friends coming round for dinner, just popped it in the oven for about 20 minutes instead of 10 minutes to heat up when I was ready to serve. It seemed to go down a treat!
I only used half of the spices as I was told it was a bit herby and I am not a lover of Herbs, Very nice and easy to make will make again
Slow cooked
I used mince rather then pork and left in the slow cooker for 6 hours. It come out so soft and tasty that the kids want it again for tomorrows dinner .
Bake, reheat, batch cook… repeat.
Delicious. A family favourite but also a brilliant batch cook. I cooked this for my lunches and it was still delicious come Friday!
Fantastic recipe for all the family
This recipe is easy to follow, when cooking for the whole family (3 children under the age of 9) I use half the amount of Cajun spice! My kids love it and so do we!

Hey Julie, you can omit the dried sage and the recipe will still taste great! Hope that helps
