Lentil and bacon is such a classic soup flavour, and for good reason! Lentils are naturally low in fat and high in protein and fibre, while the extra added veg will help to keep you fuller for longer. We’ve used ham stock cubes in this dish, but if you can’t find them, then chicken stock cubes would also work really well.

Hints & Tips

Below we added some of our communities most common hints and tips. We hope you find them useful.

This recipe can be cooked in a slow cooker. Once you've stirred in the sage, place all of the ingredients into the slow cooker and turn it on. Cook for 5 hours on High or 7-8 hours on Low. Reduce the amount of stock to 1.2 litres, to account for less evaporation while cooking.

NEW TIP
Great soup our favourite
Added extra lentils as we like a thicker soup and this time added quarter cup of pearl barley for a change .
This is a recipe that I love.
I used new potatoes with the skin on. Just put everything in the pot and leave it to cook.
I used Ham Ribs
I used ham ribs making the soup instead of bacon and it added more depth and flavour to it. I doubled up the quantities and made it on the Hob instead of my soupmaker. I diced everything up into small pieces.
Easy and quick to make
I cook and use a gammon joint instead of bacon
My favourite. Have made this more than any other recipe.
Quick, easy and delicious. I don't use quite as much stock as the recipe states. This makes a thicker soup.
Really quick and easy to prep and cook. Tastes so good.
If time, simmer for longer specially if veg is abit on chunky side. Plus it thickens soup
The best soup
Great for lunches, I take mine in a food flask

‘A lovely bowl of comfort in this delicious nourishing soup, full of goodness and flavour. I swapped bacon for ham ribs and I grated a carrot in at the end of cooking process. Another healthy recipe full of goodness. Thank you Kate and Kay Allison.’

Just wondering if this could be cooked on pressure cook in the instant pot? I’m guessing if it can the timings would be reduced
