Since we started on the Slimming World journey the one thing we’ve realised is this…..
If you don’t mix things up and keep it interesting you’ll soon start struggling and fall off the wagon.
Lunch and dinner ideas are pretty easy to find. There’s loads to choose from, that cater for most tastes (just take a look at some of our recipes!) Breakfasts, however, can be a different story.

There’s plenty of recipes around for baked oats, waffles, breakfast muffins and cooked breakfasts, but we all have busy lives. Sometimes we just don’t have the time. That’s when cereals for breakfast, or a ‘grab and go’ cereal bars come in handy.
But then we’re faced with another dilemma….Which one do you choose?
Of course you’re not limited to eating cereals for breakfast. You can have them at any time of the day.
Most of us wouldn’t have thought twice about having unlimited cereals for breakfast before we joined Slimming World. But, now we’re taking Healthy Extras and Syns into account, so we asked the members of our Facebook group for their thoughts and ideas.
We’ll start with Porridge Oats
We all know that we can have 40g of run of the mill (pardon the pun!) porridge oats but apart from Waffles, Baked and Overnight Oats what can we do to liven it up and make it a bit more interesting?
Why not try adding some fresh or frozen berries or sliced banana to keep it Syn free.
Or if you don’t mind using a Syn or two try a teaspoon of syrup, some Sweet Freedom Fruit Syrup or Choc Shot.
You could even throw in a few chocolate chips or some dried fruit, but don’t forget to check the syn value on the Slimming World website or app.
A sprinkle of Sukrin Gold on top is the finishing touch!
Some people even like to make it with water and a pinch of salt!
So what about other cereals for breakfast?
This is a popular choice. You can have a couple as your Healthy Extra B (even the chocolate ones!), most supermarkets do their own version which you can also use as you’re HEB, just check the Slimming World website or app for exact amounts.If you don’t want to use up either of your Healthy Extra A choices on milk then why not try soaking them with some hot water from the kettle, then adding some fat free yogurt, either plain or flavoured, and a handful of fruit? Or you could try using them in overnight oats instead of porridge oats.
Shredded Wheat and Shreddies
Sadly the frosted varieties are no longer classed as a Healthy Extra, so you would have to syn those, but the regular, none frosted ones can be used as your HEB.
You can have 2 Shredded Wheat or 40g of Shreddies. Again, most supermarkets do their own versions which are also classed as your Healthy Extra, so check Slimming World Syns Online on the website or app to be sure which ones.
This is the plain puffed wheat, not the sugar coated variety (that will cost you around 4.5 Syns per 25g). Puffed wheat is a recent discovery for us.
40g for your HEB, but you get loads for that 40g! You can get them from Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsburys and Home Bargains usually stock it too.
The majority of muesli will cost you around 4.5 syns for 25g, but there are quite a few that you can have as your HEB. Mornflake Swiss Style, Dorset Simply Nutty, Lidl Simply Sumptuous Muesli Really Nutty, Jordans Muesli Natural with No Added Sugar, Morrisons Extra Fruity or Swiss Style Muesli, amongst others can all be used as a Healthy Extra.
The amounts vary slightly so always check Syns Online or the Slimming World app for the most up to date amounts.
These are little pillows of shredded wheat with a blueberry filling, and they can be used as your HEB.
Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Asda, CO-Op and Sainsburys all do their own versions, but you’ll have to check the Slimming World site or app for exact amounts.
Unfortunately there aren’t many Granolas that can be used as your HEB. You would have to Syn most of them, but there are a few that are HEBs.
Quaker Oats Wholesome Granola Goji & Blueberry, Mornflake Oatbran Granola Raisin, Apple & Coconut. Kellogg’s Delightful Fruit Granola and Harvest Morn Benefit Lighter Granola with Raspberry & Apple have just recently been added to the Healthy Extras list.
There are a number of different cereals containing bran. All-Bran, Bran Flakes, Weetabix Crunchy Bran, Kelloggs All-Bran Golden Crunch can all be used as your HEB.
Another option for bran that we have seen a few people mention is crushed up Scan Bran mixed with fat free plain or flavoured yogurt. Add some fresh or frozen fruit for some of that all important speed.
Despite the name, this doesn’t contain grapes or nuts!! It’s actually made with wheat and barley, and you can have 40g for your HEB, and you can pick them up in Tesco.
Using both of your Healthy Extras for Breakfast
In the past many people didn’t like using their Healthy Extras so early in the day so rather than using normal milk, they switch to unsweetened almond drink or unsweetened coconut drink as it is lower in Syns.
However, since the 2019 changes you can have 2 Healthy Extra A choices a day! Read more about the changes here.
Alternatively a lot of people soak their cereal with some hot water from the kettle, then stir in a plain or flavoured fat free yogurt, throwing in some fruit for some extra speed.
Cereals for Breakfast on the go
If you’re in a rush in the morning there are some cereal bars that count as your HEB. Probably the most well known one amongst Slimming Worlders is the Hi Fi bar. You’ll find a variety of flavours in group and you can have 2 Hi-Fi Light Bars for your HEB.
Of course there are plenty of other cereal bar options you can have as your HEB. As well as popular brands like Alpen Light Bars, most supermarkets now sell their own brand bars.
Morrisons NuMe Chewy Cereal Bars, Asda Good & Counted Cereal Bars, Tesco Healthy Living Cereal Bars, Aldi Harvest Morn Benefit Cereal Bars, Special K Chewy Delight Bars and Weetabix Oaty Bars are just a few of those available, so have a look around. As always double check the Slimming World site or app for the syn values and the number of bars makes up your HEB allowance.
